Significance

Silica-alumina-supported tertiary amine catalysts [e.g., SA(500)-NEt2 (‘500’ was denoted as calcination temperature (˚C)] were applied to 1,4-addition of nitroalkanes and thiols to eletron-deficient alkenes. The 1,4-addition of nitroalkanes 1 (3 mmol) to alkenes 2 (1 mmol) was carried out with the SA(500)-NEt2 (0.045 mmol) in toluene to give the corresponding products 3 (11 examples, 24-96% yield).
