Significance

The synthesis of 2-aminobenzothiazoles by iron-catalyzed reaction of 2-haloanilines with isothiocyanates is reported. The procedure takes advantage of a previously reported iron-catalyzed S-arylation process (A. Correa, M. Carril, C. Bolm Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 120, 2922). Many combinations of bases and iron sources were tested in order to establish FeF3 as the catalyst of choice. The substrate scope was well studied, and many functional groups were shown to be tolerated. The yields range from modest to excellent.
