Significance

Silica-bound S-sulfonic acid catalyst (SBSSA) 2 was prepared from 3-mercaptopropylsilica 1 and chlorosulfonic acid. The one-port condensation of benzaldehyde, aniline, and trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) was performed with SBSSA in ethanol to afford the α-amino nitrile 5a in 94% yield.
