Significance
The 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO) radical is used as an oxidant for the cross-coupling of aryl- and alkynylmagnesium compounds. The coupling is performed without adding any transition metals. Functional groups, such as esters, amides and cyanides, are tolerated under the reaction conditions.
