Significance
Black to transmissive electrochromic polymers are prepared via reproducible random polymerization of substituted 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole moieties. The resulting donor-acceptor polymers absorb uniformly across the visible spectrum (400-700 nm), therefore showing a black color in the neutral state. Upon oxidation, the absorption shifts into the infrared region and the polymers become transmissive. Spray-cast polymer thin films exhibit high transmission contrast, short response time, and long-term stability.
