A new synthetic approach to γ-lactones via an intermolecular oxidative [3+2] cycloaddition of alkenes with anhydrides is reported. This copper(II)-catalyzed cyclization uses oxygen as sole oxidant and the anhydride as solvent and proceeds well for a broad range of substrates.
