Significance

Extended porphyrins 1 and 2 are prepared via an acid-catalyzed condensation, oxidation, and complexation sequence followed by oxidative cyclization. Porphyrin 1 containing one fused boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) unit is obtained in very high yield, while the yield of 2 is degraded due to the harsher cyclization conditions.
