Significance

Magnetic nanoparticle supported dendric composites 4[Gn] with OsO4 ²- as counter anion were prepared according to eq. 1. The osmium composites 4[G2] catalyzed the dihydroxylation of olefins 5 with NMO in acetone-H2O (2:1, v/v) to afford the corresponding diols 6 in up to 97% yield (eq. 2, 10 examples). After the dihydroxylation of β-methylstyrene (5a), the catalyst was recovered by magnetic separation and reused four times (6a, 4th reuse: 96% yield).
