Passiflora edulis and Passiflora setacea: Promising wound healing activity

When used appropriately, herbal medicines can contribute to the citizens health, mainly those patients receiving polypharmacotherapy. Some Passiflora spp., popularly known as passion flower, have been used in traditional medicine as sedatives. In Brazil, the leaves of 2 Passiflora species (P. edulis; P. setacea), morphologically similar to P. incarnata, have also been used for wound healing. This abstract describes a wound healing comparative study in rats of 2 freeze-dried Passiflora extracts incorporated in gel formulation [1]. The wound areas were measured using software. The means of wound area measurements were compared using one-way ANOVA, followed by Bonferoni tests. The extracts exhibited 75% reduction in the wound area in relation to the control (53%). The results were considered significant when p < 0.05. This project was approved by the ethics committee. The comparative morpho-anatomical features of aerial parts of 2 species were described and documented [2]. Both species belonging to the same genus share common features, but diagnostic characteristics allow the differentiation of these materials. Main differences between the 2 species include: non glandular trichome (localization, type), idioblasts containing phenolics (presence/absence and distribution), shape of midrib and stem. The chemical profile of each extract was determined by LCMS/MS and NMR. Luteoline 8-C-rhamnosyl glucoside was isolated from P. setacea. The association of morphoanatomic features and chromatographic fingerprints of these herbal drugs are an approach for the quality assessment of these promising herbal medicines.
