Effect Of Selected Herbal Extracts On MCF-7(Breast Cancer) Cell Line
Three plants growing in the Araku Valley region of Andhra Pradesh- Ipomoea hederacea (IPO) Family: Convolvulaceae, Hymenodictyon excelsum (HYD) Family: Rubiaceae, Callicarpa arborea (CAL) Family: Verbenaceae, were selected for the study. Their hydro alcoholic extracts (70%) were prepared and tested for anti-cancer activity on MCF-7 (Breast Cancer) Cell line at different doses (6.25, 125, 25, 50, 100, 200 µg/mL). The MTT assay developed by Mosmann was modified and used to determine the inhibitory effects of test extracts on cell growth in vitro. Tamoxifen was used as the standard and the IC50 was determined (1).
It was found that the percentage cell Inhibition increased with increasing concentration of the extracts. Also, maximum Inhibition was produced at 200 µg/ml. IPO exhibited a better activity as compared to HYD and CAL. The IC50 was found to be as follows: tamoxifen: 9.15 µg/mL, IPO: 89.256 µg/mL, HYD: 162.79 µg/mL, CAL: 225.435 µg/mL.
