Zehneria (Cucurbitaceae) is a tropical and subtropical dioecious, perennial vine that consists of approximately 35 species. Zehneria is used in folk medicine for the treatment of skin diseases, diabetes and jaundice in Africa and India. Phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of Zehneria scabra Sond. resulted in the isolation and structure elucidation of two new compounds: 3,10-dihydroxy-5,6-epoxy-β-ionol (1) and 3,10-dihydroxy-5,6-epoxy-β-ionyl-10-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2) with five known compounds (3-7), which are reported for the first time from this plant species. The known compounds were identified as cucumegastigmane I (3), corchoionoside C (4); indole-3-carboxylic acid (5), methyl indole-3-carboxylate (6) and benzyl-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7) by their NMR, HRESIMS spectral data analyses, as well as on comparison with reported values [1 – 4].
