Alkyl group interchange (transesterification) proceeds on heating a potassium O-alkyl thiocarbonate with an alcohol having an alkyl group different from that of the potassium salt. This transesterific- ation is utilized to prepare potassium O-alkyl thiocarbonates since the direct method by reaction of alkoxide ion with carbonyl sulfide is less efficient. The reaction of potassium O-alkyl thiocarbonates with alkyl carbonochloridates gives symmetrical or unsymmetrical dialkoxycarbonyl sulfides in high yields.
