The synthesis of thymidine dimers containing an urea moiety in place of the natural phosphodiester backbone is described. These new dimers were incorporated in oligodeoxyribonucleotides and melting temperatures (Tm) of the DNA/RNA and DNA/DNA duplexes as well as the nuclease resistance of these single strands were determined. In addition, molecular modeling studies are reported.
