A range of 1,9-dicyano-dipyrromethanes were prepared from 1,9-dicarboxy- or 1,9-diunsubstituted-dipyrromethanes by decarboxylation (of the acids) and treatment with chlorosulfurylisocyanate in DMF; a dicyanodifurylmethane was prepared similarly. These 1,9-dicyano derivatives are important as precursors to "expanded" porphyrin-like macrocycles.
