The synthesis of the first pretzel-shaped molecules - via catenane precursors - is described. Directed integration of sulfonamide units into an in/out-isomeric and amide-type catenane allowed double alkylation by suitable bridging units at the two sulfonamide nitrogens and made therewith possible a broad synthetic entry into this new molecular topology.
