A variety of representative 1,n-diols, ranging from 3 to 9 carbon atoms, were selectively mono-benzylated by benzyl bromide and potassium or sodium hydroxide in THF in the presence of a catalytic amount of crown ether. This method gave high yields of monobenzylated alcohols and was found to be reliable on a preparative scale.
