The synthesis of linear ethylene-bridged bis (8-hydroxyquinoline) ligands 1-H 2 and 2-H 2 , which are building blocks for the metal-directed self-assembly of helicate type coordination compounds, is reported. The reaction sequences involve nickel(0)-catalyzed homocouplings of the benzyl bromides 6 or 9 as key steps.
