Abstract
Pregnant female Wistar rats were administered Plectranthus fruticosus L'Hérit. (Labiatae) essential oil (0.5, 2.5, or 5.0 mg/kg/day) or olive oil orally on days 6 to 15 of gestation. The fetuses were removed for examination on day 20 of gestation. Essential oil was not maternotoxic, but it induced embryotoxicity as manifested by increased resorptions and malformations. The observed malformations were predominantly related to eyes for dosis > 5 mg/kg.
