Abstract

Different extracts and fractions with defined valepotriate contents, pure valepotriates and their degradation products have been tested for their influence on the spontan motility of mice and the results discussed with respect to former findings and the percentage content of genuine active compounds. The results confirm, that the valepotriates and Valeriana extracts with enriched valepotriate content exert the strongest sedative activity, whilst the ethereal oil adds to this activity to a smaller extent than reported earlier. The high sedative activity of Homobaldrinal leads to the conclusion that the genuine valepotriates are not the active forms of Valeriana preparations.
