Abstract

Cell suspensions of Dioscorea deltoidea were studied in the stationary phase of growth in Murashige and Skoog's revised tobacco medium depleted of either carbohydrates, growth regulators, nitrogen or supplemented with hydroxyurea. Stationary phase cells and media were collected after ten days incubation and analyzed by TLC and GLC. The concentration of phytosterols and diosgenin was significantly greater in stationary phase cells incubated in media depleted of carbohydrates.
