Significance
Xia and co-workers report a photosensitized gold-catalyzed protocol for the cross-coupling of aryl bromides with carboxylic acids. The reaction takes place under mild conditions, which is of note considering the usual low reactivity of aryl bromides in gold catalysis.

Comment
Experimental and computational studies revealed that the reaction proceeds via a photoinduced energy transfer (EnT) that enables the oxidative addition of the gold(I) complex to the aryl bromide. A second EnT event facilitates reductive elimination of the aryl–Au(III) complex, thereby closing the catalytic cycle.
