Significance

The late-stage functionalization of oligopeptides bears enormous potential for drug discovery and for the pharmaceutical industry. Here, the authors have introduced carbazolyl phthalonitrile derivatives onto peptides under mild reaction conditions.

Comment

The functionalization took place at the C-terminal of the peptide chain with the help of both photoredox and energy transfer catalysis to afford the corresponding modified peptides. Furthermore, the functionalization allows functionalization at different positions for Cys depending on the reaction conditions.
