Significance

Platencin was isolated from the ­microorganism Streptomyces platensis along with platensimycin. Both natural products have sparked a great deal of interest due to their impressive antibiotic properties, especially against drug resistant bacterial strains. This paper details a short and simple route to the polycyclic head of platencin.
