Significance

Copper oxide-supported palladium nanoparticles (CuO/Pd) were prepared by treatment of Cu(NO3)2˙3H2O with Pd(OAc)2 in the presence of polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG6000) followed by microwave irradiation at pH = 10. Shapes of CuO/Pd were controlled by the amount of PEG6000. Thus, the use of 4 g and 12 g of PEG6000 afforded rod-shaped CuO/Pd (CuO/Pd-rod) and oval-shaped CuO/Pd (CuO/Pd-oval), respectively. CuO/Pd-oval promoted the Suzuki coupling of aryl halides 1 and aryl boronic acids 2 to give biaryls 3 in 70-90% yield (15 examples). CuO/Pd-rod was utilized for the cyanation of aryl iodides 4 to give the corresponding nitriles 5 in 60-80% yield (11 examples).
