Significance

Resolvin E2 is derived from eicosapentaenoic acid by the action of cyclooxygenase-2 and 5-lipoxygenase. It reduces neutrophil infiltration and proinflammatory cytokine production in vivo and therefore has potential for treating inflammatory diseases. The synthesis of Inoue and co-workers uses an efficient catalytic desymmetrization of the anhydride A with the quinine-derived catalyst B to give C, a procedure described by Song and co-workers (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 7872).
