Significance

Magnesium is shown to react with di- or trichloroalkanes in the presence of (Ph3P)Ru(Cp*)Cl2 and an alkene, giving rise to substituted cyclopropanes. This one-pot conversion is a sequence of ATRA (atom-transfer radical addition) and dechlorination reactions.
