Diastereoselective Synthesis of Axially Chiral Biaryls

Significance

The authors report a protocol for the asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral biaryls via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling between organoboranes and aryl iodides bearing a sulfinyl moiety which acts as a chiral auxiliary. This report demonstrates a different approach to the synthesis of atropisomeric biaryls which are important motifs in natural products as well as in ligands for catalysis.
