Significance

Indole alkaloids akuammicine and strychnine are members of the Strychnos family. Their complex molecular structure has made them a popular target for synthesis since 1954, when the first total synthesis of strychnine was disclosed by Woodward (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1954, 76, 4749).
