Significance
Spiniferin-1 was isolated in 1975 from the Mediterranean sponge Pleraplysilla spinifera from the Bay of Naples. Spiniferin-1 is a unique furanosesquiterpene and is the only known natural product to consist of a 1,6-methano[10]-annulene scaffold. This, along with the inherent chemical instability of the final product, has contributed to the challenging nature of this synthesis.
