Significance

Here, the authors report an efficient, regioselective synthesis of a 1,8-dibromo­pyrene unit (2). The easy preparation of useful quantities of this compound allows for access to pyrenylene-ethynlene macrocycles (3-5). These are the first reported examples of pyrene-containing arylene-ethynylene macrocycles, a very important class of shape-persistent macrocycles.
