Significance
The welwitindolinone class of natural products is isolated from the blue-green algae Hapalosiphon welwitschii and Westiella intricata. The target molecule was shown to reverse P-glycoprotein-mediated multiple drug resistance to a variety of cancer drugs in human cell lines. It is therefore promising as a lead for treatment of drug-resistant tumors.
