Keynote Lecture 2 “Psychedelics in mental health – therapeutic potential and possible brain mechanisms”
After a decades-long global arrest of research on psychedelic drugs, investigations into psychedelic-assisted therapies have recently provided promising results for a range of serious psychiatric conditions, including major depression and tobacco and alcohol addictions. In his talk David will focus on depression, hereunder address why it is important to explore new avenues for treating this condition - namely because not much has happened in the space for decades whilst depression is only becoming more of an issue in the ranks of global health. He will give an introduction to the psychedelic science work undertaken at Imperial College London, hereunder the clinical therapy model employed with these compounds. He will be highlighting recent clinical discoveries and discuss how these developments at Imperial and in the psychedelic scientific field in general show great promise for this treatment for depression as well as other non-psychotic mental health conditions. Additionally, he will show data related to possible psychological and neurobiological mechanism, and discuss how the model appears to differ significantly from conventional pharmacotherapy in mental health.
