Abstract
Carcinoma of the colon is usually associated with conditions such as familial adenomatous
polyposis, and ulcerative colitis. Primary carcinoma of the colon is very rare in
children. A series of eight children with primary carcinoma of the colon is presented.
The commonest symptom was right iliac fossa pain. All children had poorly differentiated,
highly aggressive tumours. In spite of surgery and adjuvant treatment, the survival
was dismal with all the children dying within one year of presentation.
Résumé
Le carcinome du côlon survient en général sur un terrain prédisposé (polypose familiale,
colite ulcéreuse) et chez l'enfant, le carcinome primitif est très rare. Nous présentons
une série de 8 enfants atteints d'un carcinome primaire du côlon. Le symptome le plus
fréquent était une douleur de la fosse iliaque droite. Tous les enfants avaient une
tumeur peu différenciée et agressive. Malgré la chirurgie et des traitements complémentaires,
le pronostic du carcinome primaire chez l'enfant est sombre car tous les enfants sont
décédés moins d'un an après le diagnostic.
Resumen
El carcinoma de colon se asocia generalmente con entidades como la poliposis adenomatosa
familiar y la colitis ulcerosa. El carcinoma primario del colon es muy raro en niños.
Presentamos una serie de 8 niños con carcinoma primario del colon. El síntoma más
común fue el dolor en fosa iliaca derecha. Todos los niños tenían tumores poco diferenciados
y altamente agresivos. A pesar de la cirugía y el tratamiento complementario todos
los niños murieron en el primer año tras el diagnóstico.
Zusammenfassung
Das Auftreten eines Kolonkarzinoms ist bekannt bei familiärer polypöser Adenomatose,
ulzerativer Kolitis oder Kolonkonduit. Dass jedoch ein Kolonkarzinom auch primär ohne
Grunderkrankung im Kindesalter entstehen kann, ist äußerst ungewöhnlich.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden 8 Kinder mit einem primären Kolonkarzinom vorgestellt.
Das häufigste Symptom waren Schmerzen im Bereich der rechten Fossa iliaca. Alle Kinder
hatten gering differenzierte, hoch aggressive Tumoren. Trotz Chirurgie und angewandter
Chemotherapie verstarben alle Kinder innerhalb eines Jahres.
