Amputation Neuroma Following a Circumcision: A Case Report

Abstract

We present a case of neuroma formation following the circumcision of an 11-year-old boy. Amputation neuroma is an extremely rare clinical finding. In the literature only a few cases of amputation neuroma have been reported, mainly located in the biliary tract, in the cystic duct, or in the main hepatic duct after cholecystectomy [[1], [4], [8]]. There are also few reported cases localised at the orbit, on the great auricular nerve [[2]], and in the neck after radical neck dissection for oral cancer [[5], [7]]. Neuroma formation has also been reported after digital amputation [[6]]. The only reported case of genital amputation neuroma is in a 27-year-old infibulated African woman [[3]].

Résumé

Nous présentons un cas de névrome suivant une circoncision chez un enfant de 11 ans. Le névrome après amputation est une lésion extrêmement rare. Dans la littérature, seulement quelques cas après amputation ont été rapportés et principalement localisés au niveau du tractus biliaire, du cholédoque, des voies biliaires après cholécystectomie. Il y a aussi quelques rares cas de localisation au niveau de l'orbite, du nerf auriculaire au niveau du cou après dissection pour cancer de la bouche. Le névrome est aussi rapporté après les amputations de doigts. Le seul cas rapporté de névrome après amputation génitale est celui d'une femme africaine de 27 ans excisée.

Resumen

Presentamos un caso de neuroma aparecido tras una circuncisión en un niño de 11 años. El neuroma de amputación es un hallazgo clínico sumamente raro en la literatura. Solamente algunos casos de neuromas de amputación ha sido encontrados en las vías biliares, el conducto cístico y el hepático tras la colecistectomía. También hay algunos casos con localizaciones en la órbita, el nervio auricular mayor y en el cuello tras disección radical por cancer oral. La formación del neuroma también se ha encontrado tras amputaciones digitales. El único caso de amputación genital con neuroma fue en una mujer de 27 años africana que fue infibulada.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird der Fall eines Neuroms beschrieben, das nach der Zirkumzision eines elfjährigen Knaben entstanden ist. In der Literatur wird nur über sehr wenige Fälle eines Amputationsneuroms berichtet. Diese Fälle waren in den Gallenwegen, z. B. im Ductus cysticus oder den Hauptgallenwegen nach Cholezystektomie lokalisiert. Einige wenige Fälle über Neurome im Bereiche der Orbita oder des Nervus auricularis magnus oder nach radikaler NEC-Dissektion wurde berichtet. Gelegentlich finden sich auch Falldarstellungen nach Amputation von Gliedmaßen und der Finger. Erstmalig wird jedoch in der vorliegenden Arbeit auch über die Entstehung eines Neuroms nach Zirkumzision berichtet. Der einzige weitere Fall betrifft eine 27-jährige afrikanische Frau.
