Significance

Calixarenes are an important subclass of cavitands and are utilized in a wide variety of applications. Some of those applications include selective membrane formation, ion sensing, and enzyme mimetics. While many calixarene derivatives have been synthesized, those that are four-fold functionalized at methylene bridges are rare. The authors’ synthetic studies provide an entry to such systems.
