Significance

Neovibsanin B is a metabolite of Viburnam awabuki. Its neurotrophic activity in PC12 cells makes it a possible lead for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The key steps in the synthesis are (1) an intramolecular Diels-Alder ­reaction (C → D) and (2) an intramolecular oxy-Michael lactonization reaction (I → J).
