While the rearrangement of α-metalated ethers to metal alkoxides, the so-called Wittig rearrangement, is a well-investigated reaction that is used in the stereocontrolled synthesis of oxygen-containing natural products, the nitrogen analog, the aza-Wittig rearrangement, has only recently attracted increased attention. This review describes the results from earlier and recent studies to very recent developments and application in alkaloid synthesis.
