Significance
The authors reported an efficient route to prepare benzo[5]helicene (4) with the key step being the Diels-Alder reaction between benzyne and diene 2. Benzo[7]helicene can also be synthesized in a similar fashion in 21% overall yield. This method can be performed on gram scale from commercially available starting materials.
