Summary

This communication gives a description of the method of Lewis, who isolated 1–hyoscyamin from Amanita muscaria L., collected in South Africa. Our experiments showed, that no 1–hyoscyamin or atropin was present in the Dutch specimen of this mushroom. The other quaternary bases already found, as muscarine, choline and muscaridine were found with this method. Lewis did not mention the presence of these substances in the African mushrooms.
