A general procedure for the synthesis of 3,5-dialkyl-1-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazoles from 3,5-dialkyl-4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazoles using the 3,5-dialkyl-1,4-diamino-1,2,4-triazolium salts as intermediates is described. The parent compounds 1-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole is not available by this method but can be prepared by electrophilic monoamination of the 1,2,4-triazolide anion.
