Reaction of phenylacetonitrile derivatives 1 with vinylidene chloride (2) in the presence of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide and tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate (TBAHS) as a catalyst (phase-transfer catalysis, PTC) gives 2-substituted 2-ethynyl-2-phenylacetonitriles 3 in high yield.
