A straightforward construction of polyoxygenated decalins is described. The synthesis is based on the acid catalysed addition of a furan to an activated enone, followed by oxidation of the furan ring. The intermediate 1-4 dicarbonyl compound gives access to decalins through a spontaneous aldolisation. Control of the stereochemistry is discussed.
