Lithium perchlorate has been investigated for its potential use as a Lewis acid catalyst in the intramolecular ene reactions. While the reactions are very sluggish in 5M lithium perchlorate/diethyl ether as such or in the presence of 10 mol% of camphorsulfonic acid and moderate enhancement of rates observed by both catalytic (15 mol%) and excess lithium perchlorate suspended in dichloromethane, lithium perchlorate dispersed on silica gel dramatically accelerates these reactions and provides a mild, effective and recyclable catalyst for intramolecular ene reactions of activated 1,6- and 1,7-dienes.
