A phenyl kainoid, (2S,3R,4S)-3-carboxymethyl-4-phenylproline (5), was synthesized from (2S,4R)-4-hydroxyproline through the oxidative radical addition of malonic monoester to Δ3-dehydroproline 8 using manganese(III) acetate.
