Thermal electrocyclic reactions have been performed to prepare indolo[2,3-c]carbazole derivatives from 2-substituted 3,3'-biindolyl derivatives. 2-Formyl-3,3'-biindolyl 2 is a very good synthon for such indolocarbazoles.
