Significance
Merrilactone A possesses neuroprotective and neuritogenic activity. The key feature in the synthesis is the use of a bulky 2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl protecting group to induce selectivity in the deprotonation of the pseudo-meso-diketone E.
