Effect of 5-Hydroxytryptamine on Isolated Aortic Strip Preparations Obtained from Untreated and Reserpine Treated Rabbits

Abstract

The work deals with the effect of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) on the isolated aortic strip preparations obtained from untreated and reserpine treated rabbits. On the isolated preparations obtained from the untreated (control) group 5HT was used in concentrations of 20-160 ng/ml. On similar preparations obtained from the reserpine treated group lower concentrations, i.e. 2.5-10 ng/ml, were required to induce contractile responses, and contractions of significantly greater amplitude were produced by concentrations used in the control group. These findings indicate that reserpinization increased the sensitivity of the isolated aortic strip preparations to 5HT. Reserpine was administered intraperitoneally in 0.3 mg/kg daily doses for three successive days to the test group of animals.
